How does it work?
Colorado Pack Company is an educational business that operates for profit with an element of Volunteer and service work included to accomplish our curriculum: Our mission is to educate, inspire, and unite outdoor enthusiasts by promoting responsible stewardship, conservation, and ethical practices. Through engaging education about the environment, camp life, the art of packing equines , expert-led trail work, and hands-on experiences, we foster a deep connection to land, wildlife, and traditions that define our great western heritage.
What is the business?
We provide equine educational adventure that can be enjoyed by folks that come with a stewardship mindset and a passion for the outdoors.
Where is your location ?
We are located in SW Colorado, On a private ranch,. The nearest airport is Durango and it has car rentals available.
Why is Colorado Pack Company not an outfitter?
In the State of Colorado volunteer work in the National Forest does not require an outfitter number or a bond.
We also take no fish or game as part of our stewardship work. We are using our resources to give back to the Forest systems !! We love it!!
Is Colorado Pack Company required to have an Outfitter Number to operate under the USDAFS VA? No
How does the Volunteer Agreement work? We have a (can be nonconsecutive days for locals and logistics)training program to cover all the aspects of packing in to the back country with equines. We will do lots of hands on work with, gear, tools, saws, saddles, packing, stock management, and how to have the best time on your trips with the proper prep and backcountry skills, Light on the Land Principles, to make it happen.
We will then embark on a Volunteer trip to do , Trail maintenance, Trash camp cleanup, or other service trip into the back country to use our skills, give back to our Forest Systems and enjoy the Mountains and become successful responsible packer! We can do volunteer work in the the San Juan Mountains region, through the months of April -Nov, we use Our Vehicles and trailers, stock and tools. Must be physically fit to be in the outdoors environment.
Are the volunteer work trips coordinated and approved by the USDA FS ? Yes
What ages can attend? We can take adults and families, Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a paid participant parent or guardian. Participants must be physically fit to do the volunteer work and able to get on and off, ride a horse on a mountain trail so age varies dependent on physical conditions and capabilities.
Do we pack meat out? No , not through Colorado Pack Company, we are not a hunting outfit or company. We can teach you how to pack game during our Educational Week clinic.
