Loaded and Packed Gatlin Boxes above on Coal, this trip they were packed at 65 lbs each and a saw on top for a relatively short 7 mile pack out. I have grown up in Southwest Colorado. I spend a lot of time in the mountains, over the years of camping I have rode, walked, hunted, fished, four wheeled, biked, climbed, all which take a plan , some gear and a "camp". I worked in the construction industry for almost 20 years and planning is a huge part of success. I worked and planned construction projects, being prepared and organized on the job or in the mountains is a key to a successful time. The more trips you can make safely and enjoyably the better. So, like almost all mountain camps/campers I had a set of plywood boxes, and used some of the plastic panniers, both having things I did not like.

The Gatlin box hangs well on a Decker or a traditional Sawbuck saddle. The curved top helps to take the weight direct to the saddle tree, allowing better critter movement and breathing. Designed at 22" long for the best animal movement in turning steep up or down trails. The idea is to be able to have camp ready, when you arrive, not digging for the spoons or trying to find the salt in the bottom of the pack under all the plates and potatoes. When the meal is over, closing the box up and go fishing or to bed should be easy in camp. I am still working out the details and will probably come up with a few other box types, but had to start somewhere. please enjoy looking over these Gatlin boxes and get some to make your adventures easier.
We make these boxes to be life time use, and to be versatile, here packed up and headed down the trail, notice the saw box on top. Pack food, cooking gear, sleeping gear, Tools, lanterns, fishing poles all safely on the trail. I came across this type of pannier a friend had, a "kitchen box". or "chuck box". Being a continuous problem solver, I drew some things up after seeing a friends box and spent some energy making a box that is good for the pack critter and easy to use at camp.

Outfitters and summer camps in the back country with lots of guests coming and going creates a unique situation, many times the "kitchen and food " is not being supervised. These latches allow a guide/wrangler or councilor to secure the panniers and maintain a level of security in camp. This keeps all the Marsh mellow and Chocolate from being eaten on the first night!!!! or medications under watch.
Get multiple sets and have all camps set up for guests.
The latches are set up for a small pad lock if you have concerns with youngsters or need to keep a few things secure at camp, like medications, electronics, important documents. While not a "SAFE" , these extra little lockable features could be just what you need. I keep my chocolate in mine locked up from the kiddos!!!
using luggage combo locks are an easy way to not lose a key in the wilderness, while swimming or climbing.
Unlike plastic panniers we can lock these to a tree , steel fence, back of the truck or trailer. run a cable through the D rings and lock them up when you leave your site or in between runs to town.

We make these boxes to hang, Hang on a mule or hang in camp. They also easily set up on a table.
To hang them on a tree using a "game pole setup". 1. Put one game pole between a set of trees maybe 8-12 ft apart. This sturdy pole should be 4-6" diameter and placed level at shoulder height. also it should be on the "backside of the trees".
Then set a pole about knee level below the game pole, the back of the panniers boxes will rest against this pole. it should be on the same side of the trees that the boxes will be accessed from during use. I like to run a shade/tarp over the whole area. (need Video)
Gatlin Boxes are made to hold 100 lbs(not recommended, for the critters health) in each box. (load them up heavy at camp). Each box is approximately 23 lbs empty depending on the qty of shelves and type of pack saddle strap/ hook set up. https://youtu.be/ZzTDtW69vFc
Generally speaking 50-75 pounds per box depending on the pack animal, trail, miles planned per day and weather considerations is a load. Old timers will use the 20% mark, 1000 lb mature fit mule will do "ok" with a 200 lbs load, including tack, saddle, pad, panniers, manti tarp, lash rope. Please do your research and understand your critters abilities.
Currently Gatlin boxes are in their first round of development and are NOT Bear Certified. Although the latch's are great and have a secondary "mechanism" we will be working on our certification in the future. These boxes are designed to be in camp, but are not water proof due to the door being a table also. Designed to be able to have a cooking stove on the open door, so a rubber seal that would melt is not a good idea. throw a lash tarp over them at camp or while packing them.
Get out in the mountains and make camping easier with a set of Gatlin Boxes
The Gatling box dimensions are
Outside: L 22.25" x H 22.25" X top W 9"- x Bot W 13"
Inside base area below door L 21.80" x H 6.50" x W 12.80"
The Door surface is W 21" x L 17" and rated for 50 lbs max.
Total approx. CU inches 5236
Total approx. 85 Liters or 90 QT or 3.03 CUFT
They have 2 - 1.5" D rings 16" apart to attach your pannier straps for looping onto the pack saddle. ( 1.5 " leather bell straps, hobble straps work well)
The weight varies slightly on these depending on the straps, carbiners used and the quantity of shelves needed. empty bare bones 22.5 lbs- 10.2 kg up to 24.5 lbs 11.1 kg each box. while heavier than plastic sets these are very functional boxes making meal prep and clean up an organized enjoyable part of camping. I have always ate better at camp than at home!!
We added a flexible handle to each end making it easier to move these Gatlin Boxes around.
The Gatling box straps are bio-thane so they withstand the weather and are easy on the hands.
The strap goes right over the top for an easy lifting/ weighing point also. We recommend weighing each Gatlin box prior to putting it on the pack critter. They should be balanced for the best trail going outcomes, 1-4 lbs is about all the out of balance a secure load can handle on a long days trip. Pro tip: use tent stakes or canned goods to adjust the weight easily or a shovel and ax are easy to add on top of a box to balance the load.
The Gatling boxes have these spring double action latches with a cable tether for a carbiner or snap to be sure they stay closed when you are moving down the trail or not at camp using the boxes. We might change these when we get into the "Bear resistance" phase of developing a certified set of Gatlin Boxes. https://youtu.be/2tUfjMA6NUk
